The Be Curious Group
Designing and Delivering a Training Deck to Explain the IoT to Female Entrepreneurs
Following the success of our first Apple Life Hacks workshop, The Be Curious Group invited me back to decode a much bigger mystery: the Internet of Things. Their goal? Help members understand what IoT means, how it shows up in daily life, and how to use it confidently — without the jargon. From smart doorbells to fitness trackers and kitchen devices, this session brought clarity and curiosity together.
The Ask
Create and present a fully animated keynote that:– Explains IoT in simple, visual terms– Highlights practical use cases across home, work, health, and parenting– Helps attendees choose between ecosystems (Apple, Alexa, Google)– Reassures the group about security, privacy, and device control
The Challenge
- •Tech fog: IoT is a buzzword, but most people don’t really know what it is. I had to make it feel tangible, familiar, and safe.
- •Overwhelm: With so many devices and platforms, the audience needed clarity on what’s worth investing in.
- •Trust gap: Many attendees were skeptical or concerned about how much data these devices collect.
The Solution
- •Opened with a “digital nervous system” metaphor linking smart objects to daily life.
- •Simplified Apple HomeKit, Alexa, and Google Home with side-by-side charts.
- •Told relatable stories: yoga with Siri, nap-time security, energy savings, to humanize benefits.
- •Designed modular “visual tiles” for a cohesive, flexible deck.
- •Built-in navigation for quick jumps during live Q&A.
The Outcome
The deck helped transform buzzword confusion into playful “aha!” moments. Members left the session excited to explore smart plugs, fitness integrations, and voice automation. Several even texted photos of their new setups weeks later. The presentation was so well received that the group suggested turning it into a recurring seasonal series on tech fluency.
